Recent research has revealed people who speak more than one language are slower to decline cognitively as they age.
While bilingualism has already been shown to improve brain function as well as delay dementia in older adults, these latest results, based on a study of 835 Scottish people which began in 1948 and now published in the American journal Annals of Neurology, suggest you don’t need to be bilingual to see the benefits. Cognitive abilities when the subjects were aged in their early 70s were seen to be much better whether they had learnt another language later in life or early on.
So regardless of your age, there’s always time to learn another language and reap the benefits!
