The Petit Larousse encyclopaedic dictionary and and Le Petit Robert, two of the most important tomes of the French language, have added 300 new words including ‘Le selfie’.

They seem to be defying the Académie Française’s negative views on anglicisms, who prefer cleverly crafted French alternatives such as ‘télécharger’ rather than ‘download’ and ‘courriel’ rather than ’email’.

The new additions will include ‘bitcoin’, ‘captcha’, ‘community manager’ and ‘open data’ as well as ‘focaccia’, ‘biryani’, ‘goji’ and ‘vegan’.
