Apparently the English language will very soon (June 10, 2009 to be precise) encompass one million words.
My first thought was ‘Surely it encompasses more than that already?’ If you take into consideration technical and specialist words and jargon from all the possible different subject areas, surely it must?
Enter the eminent linguist and writer David Crystal who has expressed his opinion about the subject in a post entitled ‘On the biggest load of rubbish…’ (which gives you a rather large hint about where he stands on the matter). I would never pretend to have his vast knowledge or ability to explain linguistic issues so clearly, therefore I will just encourage you to read his expert thoughts.
